Scientific Director, Division of Intramural Research Programs
The National Institute of Mental Health, a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Scientific Director, Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP). The Scientific Director, DIRP will lead and manage a vibrant basic, behavioral and clinical research program with a budget of approximately $170 million and a staff of over 800, including 49 principal investigators and over 300 pre/post doctoral and visiting fellows (http://intramural.nimh.nih.gov).
Assisted by a Board of Scientific Counselors, an external advisory group that undertakes rigorous reviews of the NIMH intramural research programs, the Scientific Director is responsible for the scientific vitality and rigor of a basic and clinical research program that ultimately is in the service of the Institute’s mission to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illness, paving the way for prevention, recovery and cure. This encompasses the recruitment of new faculty, the expansion of the Division and some of its programs into a new, state-of-the-art research facility on the NIH’s Bethesda, Maryland campus, and the management of scientific resources including an extensive network of core services facilities, such as an fMRI Facility, a Transgenic Mouse Facility, and a Scientific and Statistical Computing Core, to name a few. It also includes working with other neuroscience Scientific Directors at NIH to develop trans-NIH initiatives.
Applicants must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree in the biomedical or biobehavioral sciences, with broad senior-level experience in direct leadership and administration of a complex scientific research program. Applicants should be individuals of scientific stature who can command respect among the finest researchers and lead by example, and should also possess a reputation for mentoring young investigators and being a generative leader. Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Support and resources are also available to allow the Scientific Director to lead his/her own research laboratory. Experience with NIH administrative policies, procedures, and operations is highly desirable but not essential.

Director, Division of AIDS Research
The National Institute of Mental Health, a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Division of AIDS Research (DAR). This position provides overall scientific, programmatic, and administrative leadership for an extramural grants and contracts portfolio of approximately $178 million and manages a staff of 12 individuals (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/about/organization/dar/index.shtml). The DAR Director is responsible for scientific and administrative management of the Institute’s HIV/AIDS research, which focuses on supporting behavioral interventions to prevent HIV/AIDS transmission; alleviating the neuropsychiatric consequences of HIV/AIDS infections; and using a public health model to reduce the burden of mental illness.
Applicants must possess an M.D. with a specialty in AIDS research or psychiatry and/or a Ph.D. in neuroscience, psychology, or related discipline with broad senior-level AIDS research experience. Applicants must also have a background of direct administration or management of a research program. Applicants should be known and respected within their profession, both nationally and internationally, as distinguished individuals of outstanding scientific competence.
